Winter Driving Tips
Winter driving in Southern Oregon presents a number of challenges to you and your car. Cold, wet weather tests the limits of your vehicle’s mechanical abilities and the diverse terrain found in our area, from mountains to valleys, to the Oregon coast all test your abilities as a driver. It pays to be prepared. Here are our tips to get ready for rain, fog, snow and, well, winter driving in Southern Oregon!
If your car needs service, get it done now. A breakdown in the summer is inconvenient. But in the winter it can be inconvenient and dangerous! (And a tow is expensive!) Get needed repairs or maintenance done now.
Make sure your battery and charging system are up to snuff. Take advantage of our free battery check and if your battery is shot replace it. You may discover that your charging system is the culprit. Better to find out now and get it repaired.
Check the cooling system. Watch your garage or parking space for signs of leaks. A clean, proper mix of antifreeze prevents freezing but also inhibits rust. Older vehicles may need the system drained and flushed to maintain proper circulation.
Make sure your windshield wipers are in good shape. (Do we really need to explain this one?) Sun and cold take a toll on wiper blades.
Make sure your windshield washer reservoir is full. On a rainy, snowy day you can use a ½ gallon of washer fluid trying to keep your windshield clean. Don’t get caught short.
Make sure your rear-window defroster works. Being able to see out the back window is a good thing. If it doesn’t work, the Jim Sigel techs can fix it.
Make sure you have some basic emergency supplies in your vehicle. A shovel, sand bag, road flairs or reflectors, blanket, a few bottles of water, flashlight and, here’s the fun part, some snacks!
And if you're thinking about a new car, think about safety features that will help in lousy weather, like all-wheel-drive, antilock brakes, traction control, stability control, OnStar, and many other features available in a new Chevrolet, Honda or Nissan.
We love our area because of the four distinct seasons. Winter is one of them, so be prepared and enjoy it!
